Why is it so “hip” for film and media to be filled with “shock value” these days? I miss the days when artists and average people weren’t afraid to display unique styles and creativity through natural actions and not strained, vein attempts at becoming the next “best seller”. I am noticing a lot of hacks trying to build notoriety off of existing, successful ideas, but with random and bizarre twists to them. Popular culture is even more of a chaotic zoo these days that has rapidly turned into a foolish display of one moron trying to out perform the next moron. It’s not enough to be “edgy” or “rebellious” any more, that is simply the standard. If one person goes on television to eat horse anus, the next person has to go on to eat the entire horse.
Why does our society portray the idea that we must be off-the-wall to succeed, instead of having original and useful ideas to offer the public? And why do we need to thrive on “reality” TV, when we know it is about as far off from our own realities as possible. Maybe it is the money or fame that warps our minds into believing that we actually know what we are doing when we stumble onto a successful project.
Honestly, how many shocking moments in live music and cinema will they make until it is finally deemed as UNORIGINAL. Please people we get it, you’re cutting edge, unique, care-free, and artistic. Congratulations.
Maybe if someone would start writing good music or make a few films that is worth watching, I will start taking the mainstream serious. Quality would be nice for a change.
